Breaking into Group Discussions

Aside from how to exit conversations, the other question I am asked most frequently is how to break into group discussions. Groups can lead to great conversations and new introductions, so it's a worthwhile skill to learn.

The trick to breaking into group discussions is to first notice the dynamics of the group. What is the intensity level? Are two people having a personal conversation? If so, that's not the time to interrupt. Their focus will be on their own issues rather than on getting to know you.

However, if you notice two people together who look disengaged or bored, that's the perfect time to wander over and infuse some energy into their conversation. You'll be more than welcome.

It is rude to interrupt two people who are talking and then engage only one of them in dialogue, ignoring the other. When this happens to you, have the social grace to bridge back to the original conversation partner rather than leaving him or her standing on the outside of the circle.

Look for larger groups having fun. The tone for people to be included is already set. Make eye contact with someone in the group. Most likely he will see your intention to join and open a space for you.

If you are familiar with a group participant, a gentle hand on the person's upper back can let him know you are there and wanting to join. Once a member of the group acknowledges your presence and you have a feel for the group dynamics, offer input into the group discussion. ...
