If you want to know why your business needs to understand, embrace, and participate in social media, do not start by reading this book. Instead, if you have kids, go down the hall and watch them for a while. If you don't have kids of your own, spend some time with a friend's kids.

Watch them playing, communicating, and learning. Notice how much of their lives—for better or worse—are being spent online. Watch what influences them. If they are old enough, you may notice that what they buy, watch, listen to, or read is largely affected by peers they meet online, not by ads on any form of paper.

Watching children is the best possible way to see the future. In a few short years, they will be graduating from college, entering the marketplace, ...
