The Future of Facebook and the Facebook of the Future

As we write this book, Facebook looks like an unstoppable juggernaut, impregnable as the preeminent social network. For the next year or three, that should hold true. The history of the social web is paved with the rubble of formerly popular websites, however. Veteran web users remember how prevalent the likes of AOL and GeoCities were in the early days of the Internet. They also remember a time when web search wasn't synonymous with Google. Facebook, too, shall fall.

But what will replace it? We'd be foolish to try to predict that with any certainty. Maybe the Facebook of the future will look more like a virtual copy of your dorm room than a web page. Or, given that mobile devices are now outselling ...
