Rules for Following Up

You send off a targeted, creative personal pitch. You wait and wait and don't hear back. Are they just not that into you? Don't worry, this result is pretty common. In fact, we generally consider a response rate greater than 30 percent to be a success. What should you do if you get radio silence?

If you haven't heard anything after a week or two, follow up with a brief, friendly email. Please don't ask the blogger why he hasn't covered your story yet. If he publishes contact details for alternative channels, consider following up by instant messenger or with a microblogging platform like Twitter. Sometimes these mediums can be less clogged than bloggers' email inboxes.
