Working with Fonts

Sooner or later, you will probably want to install additional fonts in X-Windows for your applications (such as GIMP).

Although X-Windows supports several types of fonts, the most common ones you will likely install are Adobe Type 1, and TrueType. Both are extremely popular because they are supported by Windows and Macintosh, as well as newer versions of Xfree86. There are thousands of Type 1 and TrueType fonts available free for download from various places on the Internet, as well as commercial fonts available for purchase in both formats.

Because these are the most common types of fonts you are likely to want to install, they are the types that this section will focus on.
