Upgrading from 3.3.6 to 4.x

As of this writing, the most current version of XFree86 is version 4.1. If you've decided that you want to use XFree86 4.1 instead of XFree86 3.3.6, you will need to install the 4.1 package from the CD included with the book. The package is located in the packages/x11 directory of both the 4.4 and 5.0 CD's included with the book. The name of the package is XFree86-4.1.0_4.tgz. A full discussion of installing packages is beyond the scope of this chapter, (this is covered in chapter15, “Installing Additional Software Packages”), but in a nutshell, here is how to install XFree86 4.1. As root, issue the following commands:

# mount /cdrom
# cd /cdrom/packages/x11
# pkg_add -v XFree86-4.1.0_4.tgz
