Choosing an ISP

Before you can connect to the Internet, of course, you will need an Internet service provider. Chances are that your city has a number of them to choose from, ranging from local independent providers to national providers such as AT&T and AOL. You will probably want to choose an ISP that allows you unlimited and unmetered access, so that you do not have to worry about monitoring the hours you spend online, and so on. Here are some other questions to ask when choosing an ISP:

  • What is the subscriber-to-phone-line ratio? Expect a lot of busy signals if your ISP has a lot of customers and not so many lines.

  • How much downstream bandwidth does the ISP have? ISPs with lots of subscribers and not enough bandwidth can result in slow connections. ...
