The Gnome Panel

Gnome allows you to create as many panels as you want, and allows you to customize virtually every aspect of the panel—such as in what direction it is oriented, where it appears on the screen, and what is on the panel. By default, the FreeBSD install of Gnome creates two panels—one on top of the screen and one on the bottom of the screen. Chapter 4, “Your First Session with FreeBSD,” covered what each of the default panel icons does.

Clicking on the Gnome footprint brings up a menu similar to the Start menu in Windows.
