Although computer technology has changed rapidly, the basic principles of performance engineering have changed little. Rather than focusing on specific technologies and computer architectures, we have sought to acquaint the reader with basic performance engineering principles related to measurement, performance testing, performance requirements engineering, performance modeling, and the link between these and scalability. We have not written about the principles of statistics that can be applied, as these are well documented in other texts.
