In terms of Vedānta, man is the latest, but not the final, product of the process of cosmic evolution. This process of evolution was preceded by extreme involution of the Supreme Consciousness into matter. Then began the process of evolution, characterized by the progressive unmasking of Consciousness in the forms of primitive living organisms, plants, animals and man. Human consciousness is unique in at least two ways. First, it expresses Supreme Consciousness better than forms that evolved earlier.
