Redefining the Community

Communities must become small cells acting locally to remain aware and create unity that makes the space they inhabit safe and secure for their children and the elderly. They do so by investing time and accepting as real and valuable the fact that “Iammybrother’s keeper” (Genesis, 4:9, KJV).1 The homeless must become the responsibility of the community, not of a far-removed government agency. Some of this is already in place in our communities. For example, churches have a corporate structure living within communities; they have strong and organized systems of ingathering and distribution, and they listen to the need and meet the need.
