Preface to the First Edition

It was a chilly spring day in 2003 when Leslie Crutchfield was preparing to welcome a new cohort of social entrepreneurs to the Arlington, Virginia, offices of the global nonprofit Ashoka. For two years, Leslie had led the North America division of this global fellowship, which provides intensive support to public innovators from around the world.
