A Bit of Background . . .

Before Discreet combustion, there were two software applications made by Discreet Logic simply called Paint* and Effect*. One was a 2D paint package and the other was a 3D compositing application. It was almost ludicrous to use one without the other and, because of that unavoidable union, these two applications joined in the summer of 1999 and birthed Discreet combustion 1.0.
