CHAPTER 14

The Structure of Success

Three doors downstream from my father’s cabin stands a world-famous trout fishing lodge. As a boy, I explored this property and fished the river in front of the land where the lodge is now built. There had been a giant rockslide near this lodge, which created a fishing hole that we called “the rock.” We caught many prize fish in the deep holes surrounding those massive boulders. I remember the sad day, ushered in by the sound of a chainsaw, when my private paradise was discovered. A construction crew came in to level this property in preparation for the lodge. It was then that I realized I would now have to share my private Idaho with the rest of the world.

My dad and I visited the construction site often, witnessing the progress as the foundation, bricks, and logs were set to construct this big, beautiful masterpiece. Now, anglers from around the globe vacation at this lodge, trying their luck at fly fishing for the wiliest of rainbow trout. Most come outfitted with the finest fly-fishing apparel, fly rods, reels, and equipment that money can buy.

Like these guests, too many fishermen struggle with decisions regarding which equipment to use and how to use it. This obsession forces them to spend the majority of their time trying to find the best combination of gear, meanwhile failing to learn how to fully utilize each item in concert to improve their fishing success.
