If you are familiar with typography only on a word processor, then the concept of making text bold will seem straightforward—text is either darker (bold) or it is not (regular). However, typefaces often include a wide variety of weights ranging from thin to heavy.

There is more than just one bold, but not all of them are always available

For the most part, font weights are specified as either bold (darker) or normal (regular). Open type fonts, however, can specify numeric weights ranging from 100 to 900 in increments of 100 (i.e., there is a font weight 300, but not a font weight 367).
