Web Safe Fonts

The fundamental fact of Web typography is that if a font is not available to the end user’s Web browser, then it will not appear when the user views your Web page. Fonts that are readily accessible on the end user’s machine are referred to as Web safe fonts. It does not matter how many fonts you have at your disposal on your computer—if people viewing your Web page do not have that font file on their computer or the browser cannot somehow download it, they will not see the Web design the way you do.

This is why so many Web sites use the same fonts. They rely on the nine core Web fonts that are almost ubiquitously available on computers around the world.
