18. Search

One of the biggest, and certainly one of the most confusing, changes between Windows 8.0 and Windows 8.1 is in the handling of search functionality. This book isn’t really about the platform differences, but in this case the change is so fundamental, and because of concerns about backward compatability, the documentation is so confusing, that I want to start by explaining exactly what’s going on.

In Windows 8.0, Search was a contract, just like the Share and Settings contracts we looked at in the last chapter.
