Metrics tracking should be a topic addressed from the beginning of product design, simply because metrics are needed to understand where we are treading, where and how we are going.

So, even in the planning phase, begin by stating the purpose of the product: what are we trying to solve? What do I want to give to people? And contrary to what you may imagine, this answer does not magically appear to you. It is only determined after understanding a whole chain involving questions (many), people, and an initial load of information and alignment with business expectations.
