The Fuck-Up…

New filmmakers often become so enamored with visual effects that they forget the effects are supposed to serve the movie—not the other way around. This is a remarkably common first-timer mistake, which frequently hurts the film and comes to be regretted.

THE LINGO

SFX (special effects): Effects created in front of the camera during shooting.

VFX (visual effects): Effects created during post-production.

Example: If you really blow up a car and film it, that’s special effects. If you fabricate the image of an explosion on a computer, that’s visual effects.
