Multimode Fiber

The future of first mile networking is extremely bright. Technologically, we can forecast a direct movement from copper to fiber and wireless. Where single-mode fiber (SMF) deployment is expensive, there may be increased deployment of multimode fiber (MMF). MMF, by principle, allows the transmission of multiple modes of light. Modes are solutions of Maxwell's equation for transmission in an optical fiber. Multiple modes means more attenuation per kilometer. However, the relatively shorter distances seen in the first mile are good motivators for the deployment of MMF. MMF is cheaper than SMF.
