CWDM and PON
PON networks can be easily laid over CWDM access networks, as shown in Figure 11-2. CWDM networks can support up to eight (16 for some vendors) wavelengths and can be used to scale the first mile PON solutions for high-bandwidth applications. CWDM is transparent to various PON technologies such as Ethernet over PON (EPON), broadband PON (BPON), gigabit PON (GPON), and Gigabit Ethernet PON (GE-PON); therefore, migration in the PON networks does not affect the access networks. CWDM network elements by themselves are passive and protocol transparent, and hence do not require any management or provisioning.
