Standards and Regulatory Aspects (From “Power Line Communications: State of the Art and Future Trends”)

The frequency distribution in the power line and the opening of the power line for multiple vendors to pitch in their broadband solutions creates a need for a hierarchical standardization as well as regulatory authority. The European Union (EU) has defined a set of standards and frequency regulations for use in the power line. Unlike the EU, North America does not have any regulatory standards. Standardization is required primarily because of electromagnetic interference between data and power lines, which needs to be minimized. Standards compliance may minimize this electromagnetic interference.
