Media Access Control Issues in PLC

With regard to Media Access Control (MAC), PLC is quite in conformity with the generic solutions for MAC—namely, token polling, random access, and so on. Most protocols are possible candidates for use on the PLC medium, but they may need some modification. Some examples of these candidate protocols are Ethernet and all its variants, Token Rings, polling protocols, and so on. One of the most important protocols for MAC in PLC is carrier sense multiple access (CSMA). In principle, CSMA is a scheme that allows multiple stations to listen to the channel; however, a station can transmit its data only when the channel is not occupied. CSMA thus became is a direct possible candidature for Ethernet. Another MAC protocol ...
