Channel Characteristics That Affect PLC

As discussed in the article “Power Line Communications: State of the Art and Future Trends,” power lines are intrinsically a very hostile medium for data transmission (let alone data communication). This article identified a number of data-transmission hindrances in power lines, including the following: high noise, extreme attenuation, and variable impedance.

The PLC channel characteristics are time and frequency dependent and are, thus, unstable. Moreover, with joints, crevices, and so on in the channel, it can be described as extremely lossy.
