A Typical Indoor Power-Line Communication Network

Figure 8-1 shows an indoor power-line network. Various appliances, both electric and network related, are plugged into the power-line wiring. The power line—a copper wire—carries both electrical power signals and data signals by frequency differentiating them. In summary, the two signals coexist on the same line but are in different spectrums. Multiple networking appliances are connected to the power line. The data is segregated from the electrical power signal by an end device analogous to a modem. This end device segregates the data by using a demodulation technique.
