Link Margin and Design Considerations

Like fiber-optic network design, link-margin analysis is important in FSO networks. To determine the link budget, we need to know the transmit power, the receiver sensitivity, and the path loss. Transmit power and receiver sensitivity are obtained from the vendor data sheets. Loss can be calculated. Unlike fiber-optic networks, FSO communication systems suffer losses due to weather (rain and fog conditions). A proper margin for weather conditions is necessary for satisfactory system performance.

Power budget is calculated using the following equation:

Power budget = transmit power (dbm) – receiver sensitivity – total Loss (dB) – margin (dB)
