FSO Communication in First Mile Networks

Because FSO networks have to be precisely aligned and installed for proper functioning, advanced planning is necessary. After adequate planning, we need to conduct a site survey and ensure that line-of-sight communication is possible between transmitter and receiver elements. The next step is to install the infrastructure and verify the link budget. Make sure that we have enough link margin to accommodate the effects from dramatic changes in weather.

FSO systems support all types of topologies and are typically deployed in ring, mesh, or point-to-point architectures using classic multihop models. Figure 6-13 shows a sample FSO network deployed in ring fashion and point-to-multipoint fashion.
