Privacy Sublayer

The privacy protocol is based on the Privacy Key Management (PKM) protocol defined by the DOCSIS specification. The DOCSIS specification has been modified to fit into the MAC protocol defined by 802.16 and also includes strong cryptographic methods. Privacy is achieved by encrypting connections between the SSs and the BS. Privacy provides protection against theft of services and unauthorized access to the data transport network. A client/server key management protocol (with digital certificate) is used, where the BS is the server that controls and distributes the key to the clients (SSs).
