Modulation Schemes

The system uses a multilevel modulation scheme to maximize the use of the air link. If the link condition allows, a more complex modulation scheme can be used to maximize throughput while providing a reliable data communication path. Because of environmental factors, if the air link degrades, the system reverts to less-complex modulation schemes, thus retaining reliable data communication. In the downlink, the BS supports QPSK, 16-QAM, and 64-QAM; and in the uplink direction, modulation used by the SS is variable and is in turn set by the BS.
