Reference Model
Figure 5-2 shows the reference protocol model described in IEEE 802.16. The MAC encompasses three sublayers:
The service-specific convergence sublayer (CS)
MAC common part sublayer (CPS)
Privacy sublayer

The service-specific CS provides mapping of external network data, received through the service access point (SAP) into the MAC service data units (SDUs). MAC SDUs are received by MAC CPS through the MAC SAP.
