Operation of the IEEE 802.11 Standard
We now look at two key operations of 802.11 LAN networks from a first mile access per-spective. First we discuss how a wireless station joins an AP and begins communication. The second operation is the process of handoff from one AP to another. In the first case, there are three periods of time when a WLAN user can seek to join an existing BSS. The three periods are as follows: when a WLAN user starts its process (powering up), when a user enters the sleep or dormant mode (not having any active transmission), and when it enters an area that is under the influence (e-m influence) of a BSS.
