Summary

In this chapter we outlined the effects of wireless networking in the access area. Wireless networking was discussed as it relates to wireless LANs, and this chapter introduced TDM, FDM, and spread spectrum technologies. We also covered the QPSK modulation format for spread spectrum and discussed frequency hopping. In this chapter, you also learned about antennas, mathematics behind the antennas, and WLAN behavior.

The chapter concluded by considering WLANs from a first mile access network perspective. The next chapter discusses the complete picture for wireless networks in the first mile by considering metro access (the 802.16 IEEE standard).
