Standards for CWDM Deployment

The ITU G.694.2 recommendation provides a grid of wavelengths (20-nm channel spacing) for target distances of up to 50 km on single-mode fibers. The CWDM grid explicitly defines only 18 wavelengths, from 1270 nm to 1610 nm. Regular fibers with water attenuation peak will lose 3 or 4 channels due to attenuation caused by hydroxyl ions (–OH). New fibers such as All Wave and SMF-28e, which do not have the water attenuation peak, can use the entire band of fiber (see Figure 3-5).
