Two Is One, One Is None: The Power of Swim Buddies
During one BUD/S class, we put one of the slowest students with one of the fastest, whom we nicknamed “Lampshade.” Lampshade was an officer. He was a massive man you wouldn’t want to meet in a dark alley, yet he could run like a Kenyan and swim like Michael Phelps. The slow student was working through an injury and failed the swim, despite Lampshade’s help. The instructor staff logged Lampshade as a failure as well. One more failure could get them both taken to a performance board that would determine if they would remain in SEAL training.
