3.6 MERITS AND DEMERITS OF FEM

As discussed above, FEM can be applied to almost all branches of engineering. The fact that FEM can be used to solve a particular problem does not mean that it is the most ideal solution technique. To solve a given problem, often several attractive numerical techniques are available. Each method has its own merits and demerits. Depending on the problem, ‘the best’ method should be chosen by comparing the merits and demerits of the method. Here, the merits and demerits of FEM are discussed.
