With so much emphasis placed on interviews, it’s easy to forget that the interview alone is a fairly inaccurate means of discerning the candidate’s skills, abilities, and competencies. As interviewers, we tend to be swayed by first impressions. We get distracted by our own desires to make a good impression ourselves, especially if we’re hiring for a hard-to-fill position or we have a highly desirable candidate in front of us. We fail to ask the probing questions that reveal the rest of the story.
