Big Effects, Little Money

 

 

 

 

As I wrote the first edition of this book many spectacular fantasy films were being released that utilized any number of exotic processes. While writing the second edition, the ground-breaking movie Avatar came out and wowed audiences worldwide with its 3D humanoids and fantastic worlds. In this chapter I highlight a few of these films to examine some unique techniques. Many of these methods are exotic and extremely expensive but still obtainable on a budget if the filmmaker exercises restraint, discipline, preplanning, and lots of sweat equity.
