East versus West

When I was in grade school in Maryland, I was probably one of the few children who had immigrant parents in the neighborhood. I was very influenced by American culture and wanted to be and do things like all the other kids. However, my parents wanted me to carry on and preserve my Asian heritage, so we lived under Asian customs and traditions at home. I wanted to be accepted and not be different than all the other kids, but my life was much different than the other kids’ lives, especially when I got home. I didn’t understand why I had to speak another language in my house, or take off my shoes when I walked in the door, or eat with chopsticks instead of a fork and knife like everyone else.
