17. On the Floor

The following workday, while the car radio recounted the fallout from an ominous collapse on Wall Street, Gary told me about a financial debacle of his own.

“You won’t believe what happened to me,” he said as he settled into the passenger seat for the ride to work. “I got robbed last night—they got $850.”

He was drinking with another guy from his halfway house when they got mugged, sometime after midnight. One of the robbers hit him over the head with a bottle or something and knocked him out.
