“WOW, I DIDN’T THINK IT was going to be this different.”

The most basic aspect of the military-to-civilian transition is that it represents a significant life change. It affects almost every aspect of life (e.g., family, community, daily routines), as opposed to the transition from one civilian job to another, which centers mostly on work and job performance. Even if a service member has prior experience managing civilians in a military context, it does not equate to working with them in a nonmilitary setting. I have consistently found that former service members who truly recognize the magnitude of this change have smoother transitions down the line.
