Fiber Limits

 

 

 

As data rates, transmission distances, number of wavelengths, and optical power levels surged to new levels, a number of nonlinear fiber effects suddenly became very important. In fiber's early days, problems centered around fiber attenuation and dispersion. As fiber performance increased, so did dispersion and another, less understood limit — fiber nonlinearities specifically linked to new field deployments (other than specialized applications such as undersea installations). These nonlinearities, as well as bandwidth limits, represent the fundamental mechanisms limiting optical fiber transmission.
