A case for open source

Abstract

This chapter provides an in-depth look at the history of open source software (OSS) in the US federal government. The federal government’s challenge with adopting OSS is briefly described with an emphasis being placed on areas such as acquisition and security. In addition, major federal initiatives to clarify acquisition challenges and improve the quality and security of OSS are followed by a discussion of how the federal government’s cloud computing experience was enabled through its involvement with OSS.
