Chapter 7Producing a Feature Video Story

I often joke to my graduate students that what I teach them about storytelling they already know and probably have known since early childhood. Good narrative stories—from childhood fables to documentaries to Hollywood blockbusters—all possess the same components: a protagonist or main character, a conflict, and a resolution. Stories are only different in style and content. Fairy tales are fiction and contain a moral message. Journalism is nonfiction and contain facts and a central idea (newspaper reporters call this idea a nut graf). But, structurally, good stories all follow a very similar form.
