Social media is more than just a set of online tools and networks. Social media — and Facebook in particular — represents an epic cultural shift in how people share their lives with each other. Nowhere else has this shift been more recently apparent than with the arrival of location-based services.

Location-based services are mobile phone applications allow people to check in to physical places they visit (retail stores, restaurants, nightclubs, and so on), letting friends know where they are. Location-based services also allow users to easily see if any friends have checked in at that location or somewhere nearby.

For example, Jane can visit her local coffee shop to meet a friend. Upon arriving, she can check in (announce online her current location) to the coffee shop’s location using an application on her iPhone, which allows her to easily tell her Facebook friends where she is and what she’s doing.
