Have you ever tried to get a friend to take an old sofa off your hands? Or asked them to spread the word about a spare room you have for rent? Have you ever run a marathon (or, in my case, a “fun run”) for charity? These types of social interactions have, of course, always happened on Facebook as well as in the real world, so after a while Facebook built out a few features to make these types of interactions easier and more streamlined. In addition, Facebook can help be the middleman between you and your local community so that you can reach a larger group of people than you would by just reaching out to your friends.

Marketplace and the Buy/Sell groups are going to be your first stops for local buying and selling. Think of it as a better way to do a yard sale. Marketplace is run by Facebook, and Buy and Sell groups are a type of group managed by local members of the group. Depending on where you live, one or the other might be more helpful to you.
