Overall, Rome is a progressive European city with efficient infrastructure in place. Health hazards are minimal, pharmacies are well stocked, and children have a special place in Italian society and are welcome everywhere. However, a rather relaxed local attitude makes for variations in opening hours, and many places – including banks, offices and shops – close for 2 or 3 hours over lunch and open late in the afternoon, so a bit of forward planning might be in order.
