Control the Outcome

If you know how fast you are going and you know when you need to be done, you can do an excellent job of selecting what to do to get the best possible program by that date. You do this by selecting the essential stories first, then the very valuable ones, then the less valuable ones, and so on.

If you have a critical release date, expect that you will have to make some choices of what to leave out. And remember—that's a good thing, because so many projects deliver less than you asked for without letting you choose what you get.
