The image on the cover of Exploring the JDS Linux Desktop portrays women miners. While the traditional role of women in the Old American West was to maintain the homestead, quite a number of women flouted gender conventions to work as prospectors and miners. Undaunted by long hours spent underground shoveling earth and setting dangerous explosives, women miners dedicated their lives to financially supporting their families in times of poverty and hardship. During the California Gold Rush, women eager to “strike it rich” prospected for gold right alongside men. Female miners were also instrumental in supporting America’s war effort during World War II by mining tungsten, much in demand for its wear-resistant properties. Through their courage and toil, these miners left behind a legacy of empowerment and choice for future generations of women.
