Based on publicity stills, Carrie Mae Weems’s series, Slow Fade to Black, renews attention to trailblazing female, African American entertainers who have vanished from our collective imagination. Weems utilizes the concept of the cinematic fade, the transition of an image to or from a blank screen. Her animated, freeze-frame images make it difficult to tell whether these women are disappearing or materializing.
