In his Survivor series, Liu Zheng presents viewers with portraits of traumatized people, creating images that echo reactions to the 9/11 World Trade Center attack. Covered in residue and blood, the tightly composed faces gaze fixedly not at the viewer, but rather at some imagined horrific event just beyond the borders of the frame. Having previously worked in a largely Chinese context, here Liu viscerally addresses real and fictional occurrences and states of mind regarding personal safety in an age of global terrorism.
